02-31231 National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Taconite Iron Ore Processing Proposed Rule This action proposes national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAP) for taconite iron ore processing plants. The EPA has identified taconite iron ore processing plants as a major source of hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions. These proposed standards will implement section 112(d) of the Clean Air Act (CAA) by requiring all major sources to meet HAP emission standards reflecting application of the maximum achievable control technology (MACT). The HAP emitted by plants in the taconite iron ore processing source category include metal compounds (primarily manganese, arsenic, lead, nickel, and chromium), products of incomplete combustion (primarily formaldehyde), and acid gases (hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid). Exposure of these substances has been demonstrated to cause adverse health effects, including chronic and acute disorders of the blood, heart, kidneys, liver, reproductive system, respiratory system, and central nervous system. Some of these pollutants are considered to be carcinogens. 2002-12-18 2002 12 https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2002/12/18/02-31231/national-emission-standards-for-hazardous-air-pollutants-for-taconite-iron-ore-processing https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2002-12-18/pdf/02-31231.pdf Environmental Protection Agency 145 This action proposes national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAP) for taconite iron ore processing plants.
