| SSA-2017-0073 | SSA | Hearings Held by Administrative Appeals Judges of the Appeals Council | Rulemaking | 2020-12-09T17:45:01Z | 0b00006482d7d38a | 0960-AI25 | We propose to revise our rules to clarify when and how administrative appeals judges (AAJ) on our Appeals Council may hold hearings and issue decisions. We currently face a public service challenge, with almost 1 million applicants for benefits waiting an average of 19 months for a hearing. Ensuring that we make the best use of all of our resources is an important part of our ongoing effort to decrease the number of pending hearing requests, reduce the average wait time for a hearing, and significantly improve our service to the American public. We expect that the changes we propose in these rules will increase our adjudicative capacity and help us achieve our goals of holding more hearings sooner and issuing accurate, high-quality decisions in a timely manner. Our proposed clarifications would ensure the Appeals Council is not limited in the type of claims for which it may hold hearings. | Title II - Disability | Title II--Federal Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance Benefits | {"displayProperties": [], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2020-12-09T17:45:01Z", "dkAbstract": "We propose to revise our rules to clarify when and how administrative appeals judges (AAJ) on our Appeals Council may hold hearings and issue decisions.
