SSA-2014-0042 SSA Amendments to Regulations Regarding Social Security Number Card Applications Rulemaking 2016-09-28T01:00:17Z 0b00006481797fd6 0960-AH68 We are updating regulations at 20 CFR 422.103 and 20 CFR 422.110 to clarify that we allow applicants for a Social Security number (SSN) card the option of filing an application electronically without completing a paper form SS-5. Currently, applicants applying for an SSN card in person may provide the necessary information to complete an application verbally during the interview process without completing a paper form SS-5. In addition, we are implementing a new online application to allow certain members of the public to apply for a replacement SSN card electronically without having to visit or mail their application to an SSA office. We are updating 20 CFR 422.103 and 20 CFR 422.107 to eliminate the word “documentary” to explain certain evidence requirements. The new online application will collect and verify certain information to prove an individual’s identity for a replacement SSN card in lieu of the individual having to submit an actual document. We are updating 20 CFR 422.107 to change references from “Immigration and Naturalization Service” to “Department of Homeland Security.” The Immigration and Naturalization Service became the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
