| NOAA-NMFS-2016-0010 | NOAA | Modifications the Gag Recreational Minimum Size Limit and Recreational Season, and Black Grouper Recreational Minimum Size Limit in the Gulf of Mexico | Rulemaking | 2024-06-12T01:07:05Z | 0b00006481e31a7f | 0648-BF70 | The framework action to the FMP and proposed rule were approved by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Council) for review by the Secretary of Commerce at its October 2015 meeting. A 2014 stock assessment indicates the Gulf of Mexico gag grouper is no longer overfished or undergoing overfishing. The Council has chosen to maintain the stock ACL at 3,120,000 pounds gutted weight for 2016 and beyond. The Council has also chosen to increase the recreational minimum size limits for gag and black grouper from 22 inches to 24 inches. This increase is expected to provide more opportunity for gag and black grouper to mature before entering the fishery, and would create consistent recreational size regulations with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the State of Florida for gag and black grouper. The Council selected to modify the recreational fishing season from July 1 – December 2, to June 1 – December 31 beginning in 2016. The recreational gag season will be June 1 to December 31, or close when the ACL is projected to be reached. | {"displayProperties": [], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2024-06-12T01:07:05Z", "dkAbstract": "The framework action to the FMP and proposed rule were approved by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Council) for review by the Secretary of Commerce at its October 2015 meeting. \n\nA 2014 stock assessment indicates the Gulf of Mexico gag grouper is no longer overfished or undergoing overfishing.
