NOAA-NMFS-2015-0094 NOAA Proposed Rule for Modifications to Greater Amberjack Allowable Harvest and Management Measures in the Gulf of Mexico Rulemaking 2024-06-12T01:04:42Z 0b00006481b8c68a 0648-BF21 A 2014 stock assessment indicates the Gulf of Mexico greater amberjack stock remains overfished and is undergoing overfishing. The greater amberjack rebuilding plan expired in 2012 without the stock being rebuilt. Consistent with the NS1 guidelines, the Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) used the acceptable biological catch (ABC) control rule to recommend an ABC/annual catch limit (ACL) equivalent to 75% of the maximum fishing mortality threshold to end overfishing and rebuild the stock. The Council has chosen to reduce the stock ACL from 1,780,000 lbs ww to the SSC’s recommendation of 1,720,000 lbs ww. The Council has also chosen to increase the recreational minimum size limit from 30 inches to 34 inches to provide the opportunity for greater amberjack to mature before entering the fishery. Additionally, the Council chose to reduce the 2,000-lbs ww commercial trip limit to 1,500-lbs gw to extend the commercial season. The Council retained the recreational closed season during June-July, when peak harvest had previously occurred, and the commercial closed season during peak spawning months of March-May. Additionally, this rule will correct an error that removes the sentence in 622.41(b) (2) (iii), “Recreational landings will be evaluated relative to the annual catch limit based on a moving multi-year average of landings” for gray triggerfish.               {"displayProperties": [], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2024-06-12T01:04:42Z", "dkAbstract": "A 2014 stock assessment indicates the Gulf of Mexico greater amberjack stock remains overfished and is undergoing overfishing.
