NOAA-NMFS-2013-0146 NOAA Red Snapper Allocation - Amendment 28 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf of Mexico Nonrulemaking 2018-12-13T10:01:53Z 0b00006481433fd1   The current allocation of red snapper between the commercial and recreational sectors is 51:49 percent, respectively. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council (Council) is considering a change in the allocation with the aim of increasing the net benefits from red snapper fishing and increasing the stability of the red snapper component of the reef fish fishery, particularly the recreational sector which has experienced shorter and shorter seasons. The Council initially considered options that increased the commercial sector’s allocation above the current 51 percent. However, after considering the economic analyses conducted by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and the loss of fishing opportunities by the recreational sector, the Council concluded that such a reallocation would not meet the purpose and need of this action. Therefore, the Council has limited the options under consideration to those that would increase the recreational sector’s allocation above 49 percent. In addition to allocation, the Council is also considering alternatives that would revise the recreational accountability measures for Gulf of Mexico red snapper, including buffers to the recreational quota and recreational quota overage adjustment provisions. These additional alternatives would support management efforts to maintain landings within the recreational quota and mitigate recreational quota overages should they occur.               {"displayProperties": [{"name": "abstract", "label": "Description", "tooltip": "Describes an agency's specific regulatory action; equivalents: Abstract, Docket Subject, General Info, Related To, Summary."}], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2018-12-13T10:01:53Z", "dkAbstract": "The current allocation of red snapper between the commercial and recreational sectors is 51:49 percent, respectively.
