NOAA-NMFS-2013-0095 NOAA Amendment to the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan Rulemaking 2022-03-25T01:02:46Z 0b000064812f610b 0648-BC90 This proposed rule revises the management measures for reducing the incidental mortality and serious injury to the Northern right whale, humpback whale, and fin whale in commercial trap/pot and gillnet fisheries to meet the goals of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. This rule focuses on reducing the risk of vertical line (buoy line) entanglements in high impact areas along the Atlantic coast. High impact areas are those areas that have high fixed gear density that overlap areas that have high whale sightings per unit effort. A model was developed to determine the co- occurrence of fishing gear density and whale density. The conservation measures being considered range from closed areas to reducing the number of buoy lines for all trap/pot fisheries. This proposed rule also proposes gear marking requirements for al trap/pot and sink gillnet gear along the Atlantic coast.               {"displayProperties": [], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2022-03-25T01:02:46Z", "dkAbstract": "This proposed rule revises the management measures for reducing the incidental mortality and serious injury to the Northern right whale, humpback whale, and fin whale in commercial trap/pot and gillnet fisheries to meet the goals of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.
