| FSIS-2024-0007 | FSIS | FSIS Intends to Exclude Vaccine Strains from the FSIS Salmonella Performance Categorization | Nonrulemaking | 2024-03-01T16:37:24Z | 0b0000648642ad0c | FSIS examined Salmonella detection and serotype data from flocks vaccinated with a modified live Salmonella vaccine at pre- and post-intervention points in the participating slaughter establishments. These data show that vaccine strains can occasionally be found in raw poultry products even when the vaccine is used as directed on the label. FSIS’ current policy to count such strains as a positive result in performance categorization may discourage use of vaccination as a tool to control Salmonella. To remove barriers to the use of these important pre-harvest interventions, FSIS intends to exclude current commercial vaccine subtypes confirmed in FSIS raw poultry samples from the calculation used to categorize establishments under the raw poultry Salmonella performance standards. This change will commence with categorizations calculated on or after April 1, 2024. FSIS Salmonella performance standards are assessed on broiler carcasses, turkey carcasses, comminuted chicken, comminuted turkey and chicken parts (81 FR 7285). | {"displayProperties": [{"name": "abstract", "label": "Summary", "tooltip": "Describes an agency's specific regulatory action; equivalents: Abstract, Description, Docket Subject, General Info, Summary."}], "keywords": null, "modifyDate": "2024-03-01T16:37:24Z", "dkAbstract": "FSIS examined Salmonella detection and serotype data from flocks vaccinated with a modified live Salmonella vaccine at pre- and post-intervention points in the participating slaughter establishments.
