APHIS-2021-0060 APHIS Environmental Assessment: Abert’s Squirrel Management in Support of Mount Graham Red Squirrel Recovery in Arizona Nonrulemaking 2021-11-30T10:11:45Z 0b00006484c63968   Wildlife Services (WS), a program within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, has issued a Decision and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) entitled “Environmental Assessment for Abert’s Squirrel Management in Support of Mount Graham Red Squirrel Recovery in Arizona”. The EA analyzes the potential environmental impacts of alternatives for WS involvement in Abert’s squirrel management activities for the Mount Graham Red Squirrel Recovery Project led by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The proposed action is to implement an integrated approach using a variety of methods to reduce the number of Abert’s squirrels within Mount Graham red squirrel critical habitat located in the coniferous forest areas of the Pinaleño Mountains in southeastern Arizona. Based on the analyses contained in the final EA and the associated Decision/FONSI, WS-Arizona concluded that implementation of the proposed action alternative (Alternative 1) would not have a significant impact upon the quality of the human environment. WS signed the Decision and FONSI on November 17, 2021 selecting the proposed action alternative.
