MONICA DE LA CRUZ\n\n                                of texas\n\n                    in the house of representatives\n\n                       Thursday, October 1, 2026\n\n  Ms. DE LA CRUZ. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to celebrate the incredible\n105th birthday of Mrs. Ofelia Mata Lugo.\n  Born in 1921, Ofelia's life is a beautiful stow of strength, faith,\nand family. As a young woman, she worked tirelessly harvesting crops\nbefore settling in Mercedes with her husband, Leonel, to raise their\nfamily. Through every chapter of her journey, including achieving her\nlifelong dream of becoming a United States citizen in 1967, her spirit\nhas always shone bright.\n  Today, Ofelia is the proud mother of five children, a grandmother of\n13, and a great-grandmother of 24. Her life has been filled with\ncountless moments of joy, from cheering on the Mercedes Tigers and the\nDallas Cowboys, to standing proudly beside her son, Leonel, Jr., as he\nretired from the United States Army.\n  Ofelia remains a shining example of the American dream and the\nstrength of our South Texas heritage.
